Zamboye gold mine collapse kills over 100 people in Central African Republic

More than 100 people have died following the collapse of an artisanal gold mine in Zamboye village, located in the Nana-Mambere prefecture of the Central African Republic. The incident occurred on a Tuesday near the border with Cameroon, reportedly caused by the collapse of several underground tunnels.

Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing, with authorities warning the death toll may rise as several individuals remain missing. At least four Cameroonian nationals are confirmed among the deceased. The Baboua public prosecutor has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the collapse and identify potential criminal liability.

Dele Alake, Chairman of the African Minerals Strategy Group, has called for stronger regulation and improved safety standards across the continent to prevent such tragedies in unregulated mining sectors.
