Gold prices drop below $4,000 amid rising oil and inflation fears

Global gold prices fell sharply this week, marking their steepest weekly decline since June. Spot gold retreated below the psychologically significant $4,000 per ounce threshold, hitting levels not seen since July.

Several factors contributed to the selloff. Surging crude oil prices, driven by Houthi attacks on targets in Saudi Arabia and tensions in the Middle East, have fueled inflation concerns. This has reinforced expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve may maintain higher interest rates for a longer period to combat persistent inflationary pressures.

Additionally, market liquidity played a role as investors sold liquid assets like precious metals to cover losses in other sectors, such as technology stocks. While gold is traditionally a safe-haven asset, the combination of a strong U.S. dollar, rising bond yields, and the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion has pressured prices downward.

Silver also experienced a significant downturn, dropping to yearly lows as energy costs spiked. Markets are now closely monitoring the upcoming Federal Reserve policy meeting on October 27-28 and upcoming U.S. inflation data for further direction.
