U.S. August jobs report exceeds forecasts, boosting dollar and rate hike bets

The U.S. labor market showed unexpected strength in August, with the economy adding 162,000 non-farm jobs. This figure significantly exceeded economist expectations, which ranged from approximately 53,000 to 65,000. The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%. Notably, previous data for June and July were revised upward by a combined 55,000 jobs, including a revision of July's reported loss of 23,000 jobs to a gain of 21,000.

Sector-specific growth was led by food services (59,000 jobs) and education (42,000 jobs), while the information sector saw a decline of 23,000 positions. Average hourly wages rose by 0.3% month-over-month.

Financial markets reacted sharply to the report. The strong employment data increased market expectations for potential interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve in September, with some indicators pricing in a 58% probability of a hike. Consequently, the U.S. dollar strengthened against several major currencies, while gold prices fell by over 1%. Major U.S. stock indices, including the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq, saw declines as investors weighed the implications of higher interest rates on corporate credit and valuations.
