Gold prices in Yemen fluctuate amid regional economic disparities

Gold prices in Yemen have experienced fluctuations and notable shifts across different regions on August 22, 2026. In Sanaa, the selling price for 21-karat gold was recorded at approximately 71,231 Yemeni riyals per gram, representing a 0.29% decrease compared to the previous day. In Aden, the price for 21-karat gold was significantly higher, reaching approximately 216,778 Yemeni riyals for selling and 198,403 Yemeni riyals for buying.

The economic landscape remains characterized by a sharp disparity in purchasing power due to the country's monetary division. While gold prices react to global market movements, foreign exchange rates show structural stability within their respective controlled zones. In government-controlled areas like Aden, the Saudi riyal has remained around 410 Yemeni riyals, and the US dollar between 1,555 and 1,560 riyals. Conversely, in Houthi-controlled areas like Sanaa, the US dollar has remained between 535 and 540 riyals, with the Saudi riyal at approximately 140 riyals.

Observers note that despite the relative stability in exchange rates, the rising costs of gold and essential goods continue to increase living pressures on the Yemeni population amidst a complex humanitarian and economic crisis.
