India gold prices edge higher in early August as retail rates rise
On 1 August 2026 India’s retail gold rates rose modestly across major cities. 24‑karat gold traded at roughly ₹1,44,600 – ₹1,44,760 per 10 g, while 22‑karat was around ₹1,32,560 – ₹1,32,710 per 10 g. Chennai saw a small drop of ₹280 per sovereign, but Delhi and Mumbai posted higher rates. Silver prices were largely unchanged at about ₹235 per gram (≈₹2.35 lakh per kg). Internationally, spot gold slipped to about $4,040 – $4,160 per ounce as the US dollar strengthened, and spot silver hovered near $58 per ounce. Analysts linked the movements to US Federal Reserve policy expectations, a firm dollar, geopolitical tensions and domestic buying pressure. Although India’s overall gold demand fell 6 % YoY, total spending on gold rose to roughly ₹1.98 lakh crore, reflecting continued investor interest despite high prices.
