Gold prices surge past $4,600 amid US Treasury debt buybacks

Gold prices have surged past $4,600 per ounce, marking a significant rally driven by US Treasury interventions in the debt market. The Treasury’s decision to ramp up buybacks of long-dated government debt to manage borrowing costs has revived investor concerns regarding US fiscal stability and the long-term value of the US dollar.

This intervention has contributed to a weakening US dollar, which has reached a three-month low, providing a tailwind for commodities priced in greenbacks. In addition to fiscal concerns, market activity is being influenced by geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and shifting expectations regarding Federal Reserve interest rate policies.

On the futures market, open interest has reached its highest level since February, with speculators increasing their long positions. Silver has also seen a notable rise, approaching the $70 mark. Analysts suggest that while economic data remains strong, the combination of fiscal risk hedging and a declining dollar continues to support the precious metals rally.
