Gold treasure worth €9 million discovered by workers in Belgium

Construction workers in Dendermonde, Belgium, discovered a massive cache of gold valued at approximately €9 million while installing sewage pipes in a building basement. The treasure, found in mid-August 2026, consists of more than 40 gold bars and nearly 4,000 coins, along with a gold nugget.

The property is owned by CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a non-profit social organization that provides welfare support to people in need. The workers reported the find to the police, who have since moved the gold to a secure location.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of East Flanders is currently investigating the origin of the treasure to determine if it is linked to any illicit activities. Under Belgian law, the discovery does not grant automatic ownership to the workers or the property owners. Authorities are reviewing historical records of the building, which was previously owned by a prominent brewing family, to identify legitimate heirs. If no owner is found, the workers may be eligible for a reward.
