The Golden Dome for America missile defense program faces a potential funding halt on October 1, 2026, unless Congress secures new appropriations. U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein warned at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium that while the Department of Defense has requested $17.5 billion for fiscal year 2027, only $398 million is included in the regular base budget. The vast majority of the requested funds depend on a second reconciliation package.
Despite funding uncertainties, the program has reached several technical milestones. Companies including SpaceX and Northrop Grumman have completed initial tests for space-based interceptors, focusing on data transmission and propulsion. The program is utilizing a prize-based competition involving 12 companies to develop these technologies through four distinct testing gates.
Physical infrastructure is also advancing, with ground broken at Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story, Virginia. Additionally, a complex integrated test was successfully conducted in June 2026 at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The program aims to achieve an initial integrated capability by 2028, providing a layered defense against ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missile threats.
