Golden Globe Race begins in Les Sables d’Olonne

The third edition of the Golden Globe Race is set to begin in Les Sables d’Olonne, featuring 16 sailors competing in a solo, non-stop, and unassisted round-the-world race. The competition utilizes traditional navigation tools, such as paper charts and compasses, and requires participants to use vessels designed before 1988. Organizer Don McIntyre noted that while the field was originally larger, 16 sailors met the rigorous safety and qualification requirements to start.

In conjunction with the race preparations, the International Association of Cape Horners hosted the 2026 IACH Cape Horn Hall of Fame awards in Les Sables d’Olonne. The ceremony included sailing legends such as Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Jean-Luc van den Heede. Six new inductees were recognized, including historical figure Commodore George Anson and circumnavigator Alexia Barrier.
