Golden Globe Race begins with 16 sailors departing France

The 2026 Golden Globe Race has officially commenced, with sixteen solo skippers departing from Les Sables-d’Olonne, France, on 6 September. The sailors have embarked on a non-stop, approximately 30,000-nautical-mile circumnavigation that is expected to last seven to eight months.

Following an emotional send-off attended by thousands of supporters, the fleet has already encountered challenging conditions in the Bay of Biscay. Reports indicate the sailors are facing strong headwinds, rough seas, and the need for early repairs. Damien Guillou was noted as leading the fleet as of 8 September.

The race emphasizes traditional navigation skills over electronic aids, testing both the physical endurance and mental resilience of the participants against extreme isolation and unpredictable weather. The event also honors the history of the original 1968–69 race, featuring a appearance by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the sole finisher of the inaugural competition.
