Golden Globes reject Michael Jackson biopic for musical category

The Golden Globes awards committee has rejected Lionsgate’s submission to enter the Michael Jackson biopic, ‘Michael’, into the musical or comedy categories for the 2027 ceremony. The committee determined that the film’s musical sequences do not sufficiently advance the plot to meet the organization’s specific criteria for a musical.

As a result, the film and its lead, Jaafar Jackson, are currently slated to compete in the drama categories. This shift places the production in a more competitive field against titles such as Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘La Bola Negra’. The decision does not affect the eligibility of supporting actors Colman Domingo and Nia Long, as those categories are not divided by genre.

Lionsgate has until the October 31 deadline to appeal the ruling. The biopic, directed by Antoine Fuqua, has already achieved significant commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing biographical film in history with over $1 billion in global box office revenue.
