Golden Globes LLC sues Golden Globe Foundation over trademark use
Golden Globes LLC, owned by Penske Media and Eldridge, has filed a lawsuit against the Golden Globe Foundation over the unauthorized use of the awards show’s name and trademark. The legal action follows a breakdown in licensing negotiations between the two entities.
The lawsuit alleges that the nonprofit foundation, which was established in 2022 to allow the former Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to continue charitable work, has expanded its use of the brand beyond nonprofit activities. Specifically, the complaint claims the foundation is using the name for commercial purposes, including hosting events, conducting auctions, and developing merchandise.
This development is part of a broader legal conflict stemming from the 2023 sale of the Golden Globes from the HFPA to Penske Media and Eldridge. While the foundation is led by former HFPA members, including President Raffi Boghosian, the owners of the awards show seek a court order to bar the nonprofit from using the trademark and are seeking unspecified damages.
