Golden jackal confirmed for the first time in Ticino Park

The presence of the golden jackal (Canis aureus) has been officially confirmed for the first time within the Ticino Park. An adult specimen was captured on camera by photographer Mario Pisoni in the heart of the nature reserve.

Originating from the Balkans, the golden jackal is a species currently expanding across much of Western Europe and has already been detected in various parts of Northern Italy. Ecologically, the animal is considered a “generalist” scavenger that adapts to diverse food sources, including small mammals, carcasses, and fruits.

Physically, the species is described as an intermediate between a wolf and a fox. While it is shy and crepuscular, it adapts well to human-influenced landscapes and does not pose a threat to domestic livestock. However, the species may compete with wolves for territory, often thriving in areas where wolf populations are less frequent.
