Goldman Sachs denies reports of specific CEO succession timeline

Goldman Sachs has denied reports regarding a specific timeline for CEO David Solomon to step down, labeling such claims as “speculation.” While the firm confirmed that the board regularly discusses succession planning as part of standard corporate governance, a spokesperson stated there is “no definitive timeline” for a leadership change.

Reports from the Wall Street Journal and other outlets suggest that the board has discussed a plan to elevate President and Chief Operating Officer John Waldron to the CEO role, potentially as early as late 2027 or 2028. Under this proposed blueprint, Solomon would transition to the role of executive chairman for one to two years following his departure as CEO to ensure strategic continuity.

John Waldron has long been considered the heir apparent. To ensure stability and prevent his departure to competitors, the board previously awarded him an $80 million retention package. Analysts note that Waldron is expected to maintain the bank’s current strategic focus on dealmaking, trading, and wealth management.
