Goldman Sachs warns AI reliance may erode banking expertise

Chris Churchman, head of Goldman Sachs’s Marquee digital platform, has warned that the increasing reliance on artificial intelligence in Wall Street could lead to a decline in cognitive abilities among financial professionals. He suggests that delegating deep thinking to AI models may prevent junior bankers from developing the fundamental reasoning and analytical skills necessary for their roles.

Churchman argues that while integrating AI can boost short-term profits, it poses a long-term risk to the industry’s talent pipeline. By automating routine tasks that traditionally serve as training grounds for decision-making and logical reasoning, firms may erode the professional culture required to transform junior employees into experienced experts. Furthermore, there are concerns that AI could reduce the overall demand for entry-level personnel.
