Goldman Sachs warns of declining consumer stock exposure

Goldman Sachs analyst Scott Feiler has warned that consumer stocks are facing significant pressure, noting that the retail group underperformed the market by over 5% in August. Prime brokerage data indicates that gross exposure to retail stocks has dropped to multi-year lows, suggesting hedge funds are reducing their positions in the sector.

This decline is attributed to waning household confidence, driven by elevated inflation and gasoline prices exceeding the $4-per-gallon threshold. Several major companies have seen substantial pullbacks from peak summer prices, including Dick’s Sporting Goods (-45%), Burlington Stores (-32%), On Holding (-30%), and Walmart (-23%).
