Golegã Horse Fair designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Feira da Golegã, a major equestrian event in Portugal, has been officially inscribed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The decision, published in the Diário da República, recognizes the fair's historical roots and its role as a symbol of identity for the local community and the equestrian sector.

The event, which includes the National Horse Fair and the International Lusitano Horse Fair, traces its origins back to the 16th-century Feira de São Martinho. It evolved significantly in the 18th century with support from the Marquis of Pombal, transitioning from a commercial gathering to a competitive equestrian venue.

António Camilo, President of the Golegã Municipality, described the recognition as a milestone for safeguarding one of the country's most emblematic cultural manifestations. He noted that this national designation serves as a decisive step toward a future candidacy for UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
