Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark undergoes 2026 reassessment

The Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark (GHLGP) is undergoing a five-day reassessment session from October 26 to 30, 2026. This periodic evaluation, conducted every four years, determines the geopark’s eligibility to maintain its National Geopark status, which was first awarded in 2022.

Spanning approximately 112,000 hectares across the Gombak and Hulu Langat regions, the geopark features 20 primary geosites. The assessment panel, led by Chief Evaluator Prof. Emeritus Dr. Felix Tongkul, is reviewing management effectiveness across several pillars, including geological and biodiversity conservation, sustainable tourism, community engagement, and governance.

Field visits include key locations such as the Gombak Selangor Quartz Ridge (Bukit Tabur), Batu Caves, the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Sungai Tekala Waterfall, and the Dusun Tua Hot Springs Complex. The evaluation also involves engagement with local communities, schools, and tourism operators. The results of this reassessment are intended to support Selangor’s goal of seeking UNESCO Global Geopark recognition by 2028.
