Gondosóra program fraud: Ministry alleges 100 billion forint theft
The Hungarian Ministry of Science and Technology has filed a criminal complaint regarding the Gondosóra program, an initiative launched in 2022 to provide emergency alert devices to citizens aged 65 and older. Minister Zoltán Tanács announced that the ministry suspects budget fraud and misappropriation of funds exceeding 100 billion forints.
Following a review of more than 6,500 documents, including contracts and financial statements, investigators identified over 12,500 suspicious cases, with more than 1,500 flagged as critically high-risk. Tanács characterized the situation as a 'typical NER phenomenon,' suggesting that while the original concept was sound, it was subsequently distorted and overpriced.
As a result of the findings, the head of the Government Service Centre Nonprofit Kft., Roland Juhász, along with several members of the leadership team, has been dismissed. Péter Vitkovics has been appointed to provide interim leadership to ensure the continuity of the service and to cooperate with authorities during the ongoing investigation.
