Gonfienti archaeological site: New discoveries and renewed research agreement

Archaeological excavations at the Etruscan site of Gonfienti, located between Prato and Campi Bisenzio, are yielding new insights into the settlement's earliest phases. Led by Professor Luca Cappuccini of the University of Florence, recent investigations have focused on a large Etruscan-Italic residence covering approximately 600 square meters. The findings are helping researchers reconstruct the evolution of the site from the late 6th to the late 5th century BCE, specifically uncovering stages that precede the building's monumental arrangement.

To support ongoing research, the Tuscany Region and the University of Florence have renewed their collaboration through a new biennial agreement for 2026-2027. The partnership includes a 15,000 euro contribution from the Region and 12,000 euro from the University. The program outlines two excavation campaigns scheduled for 2026 and 2027, culminating in a scientific conference in November 2027. The long-term goal is to expand the investigation area to uncover an entire residential quarter and clarify the developmental stages of the city.
