Dominican Republic political parties prepare for 2028 elections

Dominican Republic's major political parties are beginning to position themselves for the 2028 presidential elections. Analysts note significant internal tensions within the ruling Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) and the opposition Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD).

In the PRM, a competition is emerging between Tourism Minister David Collado and National District Mayor Carolina Mejía. Within the PLD, potential aspirants include Gonzalo Castillo and former Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García. Meanwhile, Leonel Fernández remains the central figure of the Fuerza del Pueblo.

Local political movements are also active. Gonzalo Castillo recently toured San Cristóbal, criticizing the slow execution of public investment projects and addressing community concerns regarding security and basic services. In Santo Domingo Este, Rafael Castillo has secured significant internal support within the Fuerza del Pueblo for a potential mayoral candidacy. Additionally, former President Danilo Medina has criticized the current administration's handling of agricultural protections under the DR-CAFTA treaty.
