Gonzalo Suárez: Filmmaker and writer honored following death
Following the death of filmmaker and writer Gonzalo Suárez at age 92, political and cultural entities are reflecting on his extensive career. In Oviedo, the Socialist Municipal Group (PSOE) has requested that the city government grant him the posthumous title of ‘Hijo Predilecto’ (Favorite Son) or dedicate a public space in his honor to recognize his international impact.
Suárez, a prominent figure associated with the Barcelona School, had a career spanning over six decades as a director, screenwriter, and journalist. His notable filmography includes titles such as ‘Ditirambo’, ‘Morbo’, ‘Epílogo’, ‘Remando al viento’, and ‘La Regenta’.
His cultural legacy is also noted in Lleida, where he previously received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Lleida Film Festival. Beyond cinema, Suárez was a well-known journalist, often writing under the pseudonym Martín Girard.
