Gonzalo Suárez, prominent Spanish filmmaker and writer, dies at 92

Spanish filmmaker, writer, and journalist Gonzalo Suárez has passed away in Madrid at the age of 92. Born in Oviedo in 1934, Suárez leaves behind a prolific six-decade career that bridged the worlds of cinema and literature.

Suárez was a highly decorated figure in Spanish culture, having recently received the Goya de Honor in February 2026. His notable cinematic achievements include the film ‘Remando al viento’, for which he won the Goya for Best Direction and the Silver Shell at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Other significant works include ‘La Regenta’, ‘Epílogo’, and ‘El detective y la muerte’.

Beyond filmmaking, he was an accomplished author of over thirty books and a sports journalist who wrote under the pseudonym Martín Girard. His multifaceted career also included roles as an actor and producer. The Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Film Academy have expressed deep condolences, recognizing him as one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century Spanish cinema.
