Goodluck Jonathan criticizes election interference and calls for meritocracy

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticized the conduct of political leaders during Nigeria’s off-cycle elections, specifically citing the recent governorship poll in Osun State. He noted that a mass presence of governors, party leaders, and members of the National Assembly in Osun State undermines democratic processes. Jonathan highlighted that such gatherings, including the presence of 17 All Progressives Congress governors, can be perceived as an attempt to weaponize elections and compromise results through vote-buying.

Separately, speaking at a retirement event for the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, Jonathan emphasized the necessity of integrity and meritocracy for national progress. He commended President Bola Tinubu for the appointment of Walson-Jack, noting that her position was earned through merit rather than political rotation. Drawing parallels to the governance model of Singapore, Jonathan argued that a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and a strict adherence to competence over personal relationships are essential for institutional leadership and national development.
