Goodluck Jonathan urges Nigerian politicians to prioritize national interest
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on Nigerian politicians to prioritize national interest over party loyalty, ethnic, religious, and regional divisions. Speaking at the 5th National Conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria in Abuja, Jonathan warned that these divisions remain significant obstacles to the country’s political development.
Represented by former Adamawa State Deputy Governor Bala Ngilari, Jonathan emphasized that Nigeria must remain greater than any individual, political party, or sectional interest. He urged political leaders to embrace competence, integrity, and inclusive governance to foster national unity and strengthen democratic institutions.
Reflecting on his own career, Jonathan noted that his experience in public office highlighted the necessity of teamwork, consultation, and strong institutions. He also encouraged former deputy governors to mentor younger politicians, maintain cordial relationships with current governors, and discourage divisive political practices.
