Google adds AI features to Search after I/O conference

At its I/O 2026 developer event, Google announced an AI‑forward update to its Search experience. The changes introduce AI Overviews that appear alongside traditional organic results when they add value, and an AI Mode that offers conversational, answer‑first responses. Google emphasized that standard organic listings will remain and that the AI features are meant to be additive rather than a replacement.

The company’s Search Central guidance notes that while AI Overviews and the new generative UI may shift click‑through patterns, sites should continue to follow standard SEO practices to appear in both classic and AI‑enhanced results. The rollout is expected to evolve as the ecosystem adapts to the new search format.
