Google Docs and Drive add native Markdown support

Google has introduced native support for Markdown (.md and .markdown) files within Google Docs and Google Drive. This update allows users to open, edit, and collaborate on Markdown files directly without the need to convert them into the proprietary Google Docs format.

Previously, importing Markdown files required a conversion process that often resulted in lost formatting, deleted comments, or the creation of fragmented file copies. With the new update, the original file extension is preserved during real-time collaborative editing and commenting. Google Drive also now provides a rendered preview of Markdown files, displaying structured elements like headers, tables, and clickable links.

Google Workspace VP of Engineering Chandu Thota noted that Markdown has become a ‘common language between humans and AI agents.’ The update is designed to facilitate smoother workflows between users and AI models, which frequently use Markdown to maintain structured content.

The rollout began on October 5 and is expected to reach all Google Workspace and personal account users within 15 days. The feature is enabled by default and does not require manual activation or administrative configuration.
