Google adds radio tab and revamps alerts in Android Auto update

Google has released a major Android Auto update (versions 16.0 and 16.5) that adds a dedicated radio tab, letting drivers switch FM stations without leaving the Android Auto interface. The rollout also brings a full‑screen UI that adapts to any car screen shape, customizable widgets, and YouTube playback when the vehicle is stopped.

The update reworks incident‑alert notifications, placing them above the estimated‑time‑of‑arrival line and ensuring they do not obscure turn‑by‑turn directions. Alerts now disappear automatically after a few seconds if not responded to, reducing driver distraction. Google notes that the new features depend on how car manufacturers integrate the system, but the changes aim to make Android Auto more comparable with rival Apple CarPlay.

The changes are being deployed progressively and should reach most users in the coming weeks.
