Google advances AI capabilities in software development and environmental monitoring
Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that while AI agents are already assisting researchers in developing models, the industry is still far from achieving full recursive self-improvement (RSI). Pichai noted that AI tools have significantly impacted coding workflows, with much of the company's code now influenced by AI, leading to improved efficiency and a one-third reduction in software rollbacks due to errors.
In environmental technology, Google DeepMind and Google Research, in collaboration with the World Resources Institute and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, have released ‘ForTy 2020’. This AI-based forest type map analyzes global land in 10-meter increments to classify terrain into six distinct categories, such as primary forests, natural regeneration, and plantations.
Utilizing the ‘AlphaEarth Foundations’ geospatial AI model, the technology achieved a 90% accuracy rate in forest type classification. This tool is expected to assist companies in complying with regulations like the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by providing precise data on land-use changes and forest degradation within global supply chains.
