Google AI improves hurricane forecasting as Airbnb.org aids Jamaica relief

New artificial intelligence technology from Google DeepMind is demonstrating significant improvements in hurricane forecasting accuracy. Research published in the journal Nature indicates that Google's WeatherNext Cyclones model outperformed traditional systems and other AI models in both storm track error and intensity prediction. During the approach of Hurricane Melissa to Jamaica, the AI system helped forecasters identify the storm's rapid intensification into a Category 5 hurricane with greater lead time than previously possible.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, Airbnb.org has played a significant role in providing emergency housing for displaced families in the Caribbean. Jamaica has led the region in utilizing these services, with more than 1,000 nights of emergency housing provided by the non-profit since 2020. A recent memorandum of understanding between Airbnb.org and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) aims to accelerate access to temporary housing across 20 member countries by coordinating with local responders to identify those in need.
