Google AI Overviews linked to drop in French programmatic ad impressions

Data from mind Media indicates a sharp decline in monetized programmatic advertising impressions among a panel of French publishers in August 2026. This drop follows two months of moderate decline and coincides with the widespread rollout of Google’s AI Overviews in France.

In contrast to these industry-wide trends, Le Monde Group CEO Louis Dreyfus reported that the publication has not seen a sudden drop in its total audience since the launch of AI Overviews. Dreyfus noted that while the press alliance APIG has cited estimates from Arcom suggesting traffic losses of 33% to 38% in European markets due to AI Overviews, these figures specifically target Google Search traffic rather than total audience.

Le Monde’s resilience may be attributed to its diversified traffic sources; the company’s apps accounted for 36% of total group traffic in August. Additionally, the English-language edition of Le Monde saw a 7% increase in traffic during the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. The company also reported record-breaking subscriber growth, adding 24,000 new subscribers in both July and August.
