Google AI Overviews reaches 2.5 billion users as AI coding assistants advance

Google announced that its AI Overviews feature, which automatically appears at the top of search result pages, now has over 2.5 billion monthly active users worldwide, up from 900 million for the Gemini app. The tool is credited with a 10 % increase in overall Google usage in its biggest markets, including the United States and India, and appears on roughly 76 % of search results according to independent monitoring.

Separately, the AI coding assistant Claude Code was described as a system that goes beyond text generation by using a language model together with external tools to read files, modify code, run commands and verify outcomes. Its workflow mirrors a developer’s process: gathering context, planning a solution, and then acting on the codebase, enabled through a “tool‑use” mechanism that lets the model interact with the development environment.

Both developments illustrate how AI is being embedded directly into everyday digital workflows – from general web searches to specialised software development – without requiring users to explicitly invoke an assistant.
