Google AI Overviews Trigger Zero‑Click Surge, Slashing Search Traffic
Google’s rollout of AI‑generated answer boxes, known as AI Overviews and the newer AI Mode, is reshaping how users obtain information online. The concise summaries now appear at the top of search results, often satisfying the query without a click. When an AI Overview is present, organic click‑through rates fall by about 61 % and paid clicks drop 68 %. In AI Mode, roughly 93 % of searches end without visitors leaving Google’s platform, with a 77 % zero‑click rate on mobile.
The shift is hurting publishers and marketers. Global publisher traffic from Google fell by a third in the year to November 2025; in the United States, organic referrals dropped 38 % year‑on‑year, with major outlets such as CNN, Business Insider, Forbes and HuffPost losing half of their Google‑driven audience. Although impressions may still rise, actual visits have slumped, forcing a rethink of SEO strategies toward “Answer Engine Optimisation” that focuses on clear, concise answers early in the content.
Small‑business owners are already adapting. Lilich Bullock reported that re‑writing the opening paragraphs of her web pages to provide direct answers boosted AI‑referral traffic from a handful of sessions to over 300 per month. The change underscores the new priority: getting quoted by AI tools rather than merely ranking high on traditional Google searches.
