Google AI researchers depart to found Discovery Loop startup

Four prominent AI researchers, including Google co-founders of foundational technologies Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, along with Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, have departed Google to launch a new startup, Discovery Loop. The new venture aims to automate the scientific method by using AI to generate hypotheses, design experiments, and evaluate results, targeting breakthroughs in fields like drug discovery and materials science.

Following these departures, Google DeepMind is reportedly undergoing a strategic shift. The division is expected to move away from chasing ultra-large-scale frontier models in favor of more cost-effective, high-performance “Flash” level models. This pivot aims to integrate AI more efficiently into existing Google products like Search, Gmail, and YouTube. Reports suggest this restructuring may lead to significant layoffs, potentially affecting up to one-third of the DeepMind workforce as the company prioritizes commercialization and resource efficiency over pure academic research.
