Google AI search deployment impacts web traffic and shopping prices
The deployment of AI-driven search features, such as Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, is significantly altering the digital landscape. In France, news publishers have reported traffic declines between 33% and 42% as AI-generated syntheses appear at the top of search results, preceding traditional links.
This shift has given rise to new optimization strategies, most notably Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), alongside terms like LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). These practices aim to ensure content is credible and citable by generative models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. While GEO relies on a foundation of strong traditional SEO, its goal is to secure placement within the AI’s synthesized response rather than a standard list of links.
Beyond information retrieval, AI is also impacting e-commerce. Recent analyses suggest that AI-driven shopping recommendations may lead to higher consumer costs. Reports indicate that Google AI Mode listings can increase product prices by approximately 22%, while some specific product recommendations via other AI tools have shown price increases of up to 50%. These findings suggest that AI interfaces may favor premium products, potentially obscuring lower-priced options and affecting consumer trust.
