Google AI Search Mode hits 1 billion users, reshapes web traffic

Google announced that its AI‑driven search features are rapidly becoming the default way users query the web. At the recent Google I/O events, CEO Sundar Pichai reported that AI Overviews now serve over 2.5 billion monthly active users, while the conversational AI Mode, powered by the Gemini model, reached one billion users within its first year.

The new interface encourages longer, more natural queries—averaging three times the length of traditional searches—and a higher share of voice and image inputs. Analysts note a shift in user behavior called “Google Zero,” where users receive complete answers within the search page, reducing clicks to external sites to just 8 % compared with 15 % when AI summaries are absent. Google’s rollout of Gemini Spark, a personal AI agent, aims to further automate research, comparison and task execution, signalling a fundamental change for content creators and publishers who now compete for visibility within the AI‑generated results.
