Google Analytics 4 and ChatGPT referral traffic analysis

Recent data analysis highlights how businesses can track and optimize traffic from ChatGPT using Google Analytics 4 (GA4). A study of over 23,000 ChatGPT visits to 323 small business websites revealed that referral traffic patterns vary by business type. On average service business sites, the homepage received 42% of ChatGPT visitors, while online stores saw 23% land on the homepage and 37% land on specific product pages.

Technical analysis shows that ChatGPT appends 'utm_source=chatgpt.com' to links in its answers, allowing GA4 to record these as session sources. However, researchers noted that since October 8, 2026, some organic ChatGPT traffic arrives without tags or referrers, causing GA4 to categorize it as Direct traffic.

Effective GA4 implementation requires a structured setup, including creating properties, configuring data streams, and marking business goals as key events. Experts recommend excluding internal traffic and using tools like DebugView to ensure data accuracy before relying on reports.
