Google and Cathay Pacific expand AI trial to reduce aircraft contrail warming

Google and Cathay Pacific have announced the expansion of an artificial intelligence trial aimed at reducing the climate impact of aircraft contrails in the Asia-Pacific region. Contrails, which form when engine exhaust meets cold, humid air, can trap heat in the atmosphere and account for approximately one-third of aviation’s total climate impact.

The AI system integrates predictive models, satellite imagery, and meteorological data to identify atmospheric zones prone to persistent contrail formation. Pilots can then make minor altitude adjustments to avoid these areas, a process similar to avoiding turbulence. In an initial trial involving over 100 flights, Google estimated that the avoidance routes resulted in a 40% reduction in the warming effect of contrails. The Hong Kong-to-Singapore route was particularly effective, contributing to more than half of the total estimated climate benefit.

While the technology shows promise for ultra-long-haul flights, challenges remain regarding air traffic control coordination and airspace sharing. The companies are preparing a second, larger phase of testing involving transpacific routes and will collaborate with the non-profit Contrails.org to build a comprehensive operational database.
