Google and Conagua partner to use AI for weather forecasting in Mexico
Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua), through the National Meteorological Service (SMN), has signed a technical cooperation agreement with Google to implement artificial intelligence for weather and climate forecasting.
Over the next four years, the SMN will have access to advanced climate models and predictive AI tools to enhance the detection of extreme hydrometeorological phenomena. A primary objective of the partnership is to strengthen early warning systems for sudden flooding, providing critical data to the National Civil Protection System to improve preventive actions and reduce risks from high-impact weather events.
The agreement also focuses on institutional capacity building, specifically regarding the use of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to process large volumes of meteorological data. The SMN will conduct technical evaluations to validate these AI-driven products, ensuring they are adapted to the specific meteorological, hydrological, and territorial conditions of Mexico.
