Google and Constellation Energy sign major nuclear power deal for AI

Google and Constellation Energy have entered into a major long-term agreement to secure nuclear power for AI-driven data center expansion. The deal includes a 20-year power purchase agreement to add 890 megawatts of capacity to the PJM Interconnection grid through upgrades to 11 nuclear reactors located in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Constellation plans to invest over $4.3 billion in these facility modernizations, which include upgrading turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems. The first phase of increased capacity is expected to be available by 2028.

In addition to the uprate agreement, the companies signed a separate 15-year supply agreement for 2,700 megawatts of power from Constellation’s existing fleet within the PJM grid. This combined effort addresses a total of 3,590 megawatts of energy needs. To support these operations, Constellation will integrate Google’s Gemini Enterprise AI into its plant management, covering areas such as asset management, production planning, and infrastructure protection.

Google stated that it will cover the full costs of these upgrades to ensure that the expenses for new generation and transmission are not passed on to local ratepayers. The investment is expected to sustain approximately 4,400 existing jobs and create roughly 7,200 temporary construction positions during the modernization process.
