Google and iFixit partner to combat e-waste via repair kits
To mark International Repair Day, Google and iFixit have launched a collaborative initiative aimed at reducing electronic waste and promoting a circular economy. The partnership provides specialized care packages to community repair cafes and local repair stations worldwide.
These packages include iFixit precision tools and reusable USB drives pre-loaded with ChromeOS Flex. This lightweight, browser-based operating system is designed to revitalize older PCs and Macs that may struggle with modern, resource-heavy operating systems, thereby extending the functional lifespan of existing hardware.
To address the environmental impact of producing new hardware, the initiative includes a partnership with the organization Closing the Loop. Through a ‘One for One’ service, Google will facilitate the collection and responsible recycling of an equivalent amount of electronic waste from informal landfills in regions such as Africa for every ChromeOS Flex USB drive distributed.
