Google to invest $15 billion in Malaysia for AI infrastructure

Google has announced a $15 billion investment in Malaysia scheduled for 2027 and 2028 to develop data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure. This follows a previous $2 billion investment announced in 2024. The expansion aims to meet the surging demand for AI services, including chatbots and image generators.

The investment includes plans for new data center campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, building upon the existing facility in Elmina Business Park. To mitigate environmental impacts, Google pledged to add over 1 gigawatt of clean energy capacity to the national grid and work toward bolstering local water security. The company stated its campuses will operate with high energy efficiency.

Economically, the project is expected to support over 9,000 local jobs annually, with average wages reported to be 45 percent above the national median. Additionally, Google announced programs to provide digital skills training to approximately 800,000 Malaysians over the next five years to prepare the workforce for the growing digital economy.
