Google and McKinsey to purchase 320,000 tons of carbon credits for Brazil project
Google and McKinsey have entered into a 10-year agreement to purchase 320,000 metric tons of carbon removal credits through the Symbiosis Coalition. The initiative supports a project by climate technology company Working Trees to implement silvopasture systems in Brazil.
This silvopasture approach integrates trees into existing cattle pastures, allowing for continued ranching while enhancing carbon sequestration and reducing deforestation pressure. The funding will assist in converting 8,700 hectares of degraded or semi-degraded pastureland into mixed-species systems across the southeastern Amazon and Cerrado regions. This is part of a larger 50,000-hectare project.
The Symbiosis Coalition, which includes other major corporations such as Microsoft, Meta, and Salesforce, aims to create stable demand for high-standard carbon removal plans that prioritize biodiversity and long-term ecosystem protection.
