Google and Mexico's SMN partner to enhance weather forecasting with AI
The National Meteorological Service (SMN), through the National Water Commission (Conagua), has signed a technical cooperation agreement with Google LLC. The partnership aims to implement and evaluate next-generation artificial intelligence tools and climate models over the next four years.
This collaboration is designed to enhance weather prediction capabilities and develop institutional capacity for processing meteorological and climate data using Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). A primary goal is the early identification of extreme hydrometeorological phenomena, which will strengthen early warning systems for flash flood risks provided to the National Civil Protection System.
The agreement allows the SMN to validate AI-developed products under specific Mexican meteorological and hydrological conditions. Both parties will operate using their own resources while maintaining ownership, control, and sovereignty over the information provided during the term of the agreement.
