Google and Microsoft clash over browser dominance on Windows 11

Google has intensified its competition with Microsoft by deploying targeted pop-up messages on its search homepage to encourage Windows 11 users to switch from Microsoft Edge to the Chrome browser. When users access Google search via Edge, a prompt appears inviting them to download Chrome. Clicking the prompt immediately initiates the download of the 'ChromeSetup.exe' file without requiring further confirmation. Notably, the installation process includes a pre-selected option to share usage statistics and crash reports with Google.

Microsoft has responded with its own countermeasures, displaying banners within the Edge browser. These prompts highlight that Edge is built on the same Chromium engine as Chrome while emphasizing additional Microsoft security features. This ongoing struggle for market share reflects a long-standing rivalry between the two tech giants regarding default software and browser dominance on desktop operating systems.
