Google expands AI Overviews and launches global AI search reporting

Google is significantly altering the search landscape by integrating AI-driven features like AI Overviews and AI Mode. The company is testing dynamic expansions where AI Overviews can automatically occupy the entire screen for certain queries, such as definitions, pushing traditional organic results further down the page.

To help publishers manage this shift, Google has globally rolled out new generative AI performance reports in Search Console. These reports allow website owners to track impressions and visibility within AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. Additionally, a new control has been introduced, enabling publishers to opt-out of appearing in these AI-generated search features. Google has stated that choosing to opt-out will not negatively impact a site's ranking in traditional search results.

As search behavior evolves toward 'zero-click' queries—where users find answers directly on the results page—new strategies like Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are emerging. These focus on structuring content to be easily cited by large language models. Meanwhile, Google's engineering leadership has confirmed that the company remains well-resourced in its ongoing efforts to combat search spam.
