Google and OpenAI announce new AI-driven advertising and community service tools

Google has announced new AI-driven advertising formats for its AI mode, with beta testing currently underway in the United States as of May 2026. These formats include Conversational Discovery Ads, Highlighted Answers, and Business Agents for Leads. The system is designed to trigger advertisements based on the real-time context of multi-turn conversations interpreted by Gemini, allowing for high-precision matching that single-keyword searches cannot achieve.

In a separate development, OpenAI has partnered with Village Media to launch ‘Open Door,’ an AI tool designed to assist residents with social services and medical guidance. Initially rolling out in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the tool uses a directory of over 200 local organizations to connect users with emergency food assistance, housing, and medical resources through natural language queries.

While Google's new advertising features are expected to reach markets like Japan around mid-2027, the specific management interface and bidding strategies for these AI-mode ads have not yet been disclosed.
