Google and Samsung enhance location tracking technologies

Google Maps features a setting for Bluetooth beacons designed to improve location precision in areas where GPS signals are weak or unavailable, such as tunnels and underground parking garages. To enable this, users must navigate to Settings, select Navigation, and activate 'Bluetooth beacons in tunnels,' granting the app permission to detect nearby devices. The effectiveness of this feature depends on the presence of specific Bluetooth transmitter infrastructure in the location.

Samsung has released the Galaxy SmartTag 3, a compact Bluetooth tracker that is 35% smaller and 33% lighter than its predecessor. Utilizing Bluetooth 6.0 and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, the device offers high-precision tracking, including a 'Compass View' that identifies direction and distance up to 60 meters. The tracker features a battery life of up to 550 days under standard use and includes a location notification feature to alert users if a tagged item leaves a predefined area. Notably, the SmartTag 3 is compatible with Apple's iOS, allowing for basic search and sharing functions on iPhones.
