Google and Samsung release October 2026 Android security updates
Google has released the October 2026 Android security patch to address multiple high-risk vulnerabilities that can be exploited remotely without user interaction. The updates cover Android versions 14 through 17, including Platform Quarterly Releases.
Samsung is also rolling out its October 2026 security update, which addresses 45 Android flaws identified by Google—including nine critical issues—alongside 27 Samsung-specific software fixes and four high-severity fixes for Samsung Semiconductor components. While newer devices like the Galaxy S23 through S26 series and recent foldables receive monthly updates, many A-series models receive them quarterly. Older models such as the Galaxy S21, S21 Ultra, A13, A23, A32, and A52 are no longer included in the update cycle.
The rollout highlights ongoing challenges with ecosystem fragmentation. A significant portion of the global mobile market remains on older versions, such as Android 12 or earlier, which reached the end of official support in early 2026. This leaves many users vulnerable to cybercriminals who exploit known flaws in unsupported hardware. Additionally, even supported devices may face delays as manufacturers like Samsung must test and adapt Google's code to ensure stability across their proprietary interfaces.
