A consortium led by Google and the UK government has launched Operation Blue Skies, a 30-month program designed to reduce the climate impact of aviation by preventing the formation of contrails. The project focuses on the Shanwick Oceanic airspace in the North Atlantic, a corridor responsible for approximately 5% of global warming caused by contrails.

Contrails, which form when engine exhaust meets cold, humid air, can create artificial cloud layers that trap heat. Research suggests these trails account for roughly one-third of aviation's total climate impact. The program, which has a total budget of £5 million—including £2.65 million from the UK government—will utilize artificial intelligence to predict high-risk atmospheric zones.

During two winter testing periods (2026-2027 and 2027-2028), air traffic controllers will instruct certain commercial flights to make minor altitude adjustments, typically around 2,000 feet, to avoid moisture-prone areas. The goal is to demonstrate that these small deviations can significantly reduce contrail formation with minimal impact on fuel consumption and flight operations.
